Anthony Shearsmith

Anthony began his dance training at the age of 8 with The Victorian Ballet Guild under the direction of Laurel Martyn. In 1974 after 2 years full time study he graduated from the Australian Ballet School.

Anthony’s first professional engagement was with the Australian and South East Asian Touring company of Disney on Parade which took him to many countries in the Asia region and every capital city in Australia. Following this Anthony embarked on a further two years intensive study under the tutelage of Gerard Sibritt in Sydney.

In 1978 Anthony joined the West Australian Ballet company and was fortunate to work with such choreographers as Garth Welsh, Haans Brenna, Charles Czarney and many others during his three years with this company. He then spend six months in Townsville with the North Qld Ballet and Dance Association creating a full length work of La Peri. This amateur company was the precursor to Dance North. Following this Anthony returned to Sydney and worked for a short time as a freelance teacher and dancer.

In 1982 Anthony joined the Queensland Ballet as a Principal Dancer and had many works and roles created on him by wonderful choreographers such as Harold Collins, Jacqui Carroll, Andris Toppe, Rosetta Cook, Natalie Weir and many others. In 1992 Anthony accepted the position of Rehearsal Director and Assistant to Harold Collins the Artistic Director of the company, and remained in this position until his retirement from the company in 1999.

In 2000 Anthony travelled to New Zealand and taught at the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington on a six month contract. During this time he also toured with the school around both islands of New Zealand as principal teacher, rehearsal coach and driver.

At the beginning of 2002 Anthony began work at the Brisbane Powerhouse – Centre for Live Arts as a Box Office Assistant and over the past 10 years has risen to the position of Ticketing Services Manager.

Anthony still continues with his involvement with dance as an occasional teacher and assessor at QUT and is thrilled to now become part of the teaching fraternity of the 2 ballerinas.

Anthony joined the 2ballerinas team in 2012.
