Dale Johnston

Dale trained at the National School of Ballet in Wellington, and the Australian Ballet School, Melbourne. He danced with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and was a member of the inaugural Dancers Company of the Australian Ballet. Dale was principal dancer with the Queensland Ballet for almost eight years, dancing the lead roles in Giselle, Carmen, Romeo and Juliet, Carmina Burana, Scheherazade and many contemporary works. Dale was a partner of the National Ballet Centre for 15 years. He regularly lectures and examines in ballet technique at Queensland University of Technology, and completed his Master of Fine Arts there in 1999. In 2003, Dale completed his PhD in dance education through the Graduate School of Education at the University of Queensland, on an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship.

In 2003, Dale was awarded one of only three inaugural Queensland Creative Fellowships. In 2004, Dale’s doctoral thesis Dance through a Sociocultural Lens received a top 10%, Dean’s Commendation for outstanding research. Dale is currently lecturing part time at Queensland University of Technology, and pursuing research interests in early childhood dance education.
